Fantastic And Strange.
For my unit 2 project I had to choose from a variety of themes but I chose the theme 'fantastic and strange', this is because out of all the different kind of themes i found this certain one very interesting and i think i will find it really good to work on, as the photos i've seen of fantastic and strange have seemed very imaginative and fascinating.
Here is a screen shot of my pinterest board, which i made by pinning a range of photos i find interesting from the fantastic and strange category. I pinned these certain photos because i found them different from others and i found them very imaginative.
Aneta Ivanova
Double exposure- Aneta is a 22 year old photographer who was born in Varna, Bulgaria. She started doing photography when she was 13 years old and hasn't stopped since, she started taking photos when she got her first digital camera, she liked it because it gave her much more freedom to finish her ideas. She began by shooting experimental self-portraits in her home, then she discovered fine art and fashion photography. |

Iris van Herpen
-fantastic & strange Iris van Herpen creates a view on Haute Couture that combines fine handwork techniques with digital technology. I chose Iris Van Herpen because i found her photography work really fascinating as she makes strange dresses and puts them on models, but she makes them look really good when they are being worn. These dresses are interesting because they are made of wires or metal, they are made of materials you wouldn't normally be seen wearing. I like this because they are different. |

Chema Madoz.
-fantastic & strange Chema Madoz uses photography to create optical illusions. Whatever is shown, is unlike the reality of the object. He takes a minimum of two objects unrelated to each other, yet when they are kept together in Madoz’s way, they surprisingly blend as one. I chose Chema Madoz because i found his work really good. He combines completely different objects in too one and they look amazingly good and also this makes his photography work really interesting. |
Wes Naman
Wes Naman uses photography to bring out the little kids living inside grown ups and a fascinating way. I chose Wes Naman because i found his photography work really weird but at the same time it is so creative. He takes photos of grown ups acting like little kids, at the same time with tape round their face, this makes them look really odd. He also takes photos with a meaning, such a valentines day, but the photos are quite freaky in a way, they are not any old valentines photos. |

Mari Mahr Mari was born in chile in 1941, she now lives and works as a photographer in England. She is known best for making photography which we glimpse fragments of all the personal and cultural influences on her life. The photo i chose is from the series "presents from susanna". I picked this image because i find it really fascinating. In this image i can see a small child, most likely a little girl, she is wearing a dress which goes below the knees, the dress has flowers covering it and it has layers draping over her shoulders. The child is sitting down and holding her hands together on her lap, her face is covered by a huge peony flower. The image is black, grey and white, the background looks misty and faded. I would describe this image as old fashioned. I like this image because, in a way it looks like it has been sketched with a pencil and this makes it more interesting and it looks really good. |
Jerry Uelsmann
Jerry was born in Detroit on june 11th, 1934. He began teaching photography at the University of florida in 1960, this was his first ever job offer. He is an American photographer, who is best known for his multiple imagery. In this image i can see a photograph in a photo frame, it looks like the photo frame is hanging on a wall in a gallery, the frame looks like its expensive and a gold or silver colour. The photograph is of a sea with massive waves, the sea is covered over with clear clouds, the photographer is making it look like the sea is coming out of the photograph and flooding the room, in the top right corner it looks like there is some kind of air balloon flying over the sea. This photograph is black, grey and white, the background behind the frame is plain grey, which looks like a wall of a room. I like this image because, the way they've made it look like the sea is coming out of the portrait makes it seem more realistic. |
my experiments:
These photos are from my first experiment. I went around and explored the school using an iPod to take photos of different people and objects. I used an app called photo blender to make them like this, i like how it done them because it made them double exposed, using this makes them sort of blury but it looks good because it is two different photos blended into one. The photos are also good because the colour is also blended into one, the first few have a greeny yellow effect and the rest are natural. If i was to do another experiment like this i think i could have changed the effect, because the difference in the colour would make it look better.
|
These photos are from my second experiment. Like my other experiment i went around and explored the school using an ipod to take photos of different people and objects, but as well as just in school i took some photos from out side of school and played around with them. This time i used a normal camera with no apps, but to make them like this i used photoshop on the computer, i used the pucker and bloat tool to make them like this and used other photoshop tools for the rest, i done this to make them more fantastic and strange. I think if i done it again i could have photoshopped some more of my own photos and made them look so much better.

These are photos from my this experiment. Like my other my experiments i went around and explored the school building and took photos of people, above their shoulders. After i uploaded them i used photoshop to disguise them i did this by blurring and putting other effects on the image of the people. Above our my before and after photos, if i could re-do this experiment i would do more, use more people and change the colours around.
|
These are photos from my fourth experiment. Unlike my other photos, instead of taking images within the school, these images are from albums off my phone. I selected a few photos from my camera and played around with them on photoshop, i then rubbed out the faces of them because i thought this made them look strange. If i was to re-do this experiment i would choose more photos and develop them more.

These photos are from my fifth experiment. Like both of my last experiments i went around and explored the school and took photos, but this time using a digital camera. These photos were inspired by a photographer named Wes Naman, he captures images of people with Sellotape going around peoples faces. This distorts their faces and makes them look different. This inspired me to do something, not the same, but similar, instead of Sellotape I used white string to wrap around people, I thought this would look really good and fascinating because it is unusual. First of all I wrapped it around an individuals face but then I decided to add another person, I done this to make the photos more different. If i was to redo this experiment i would have added an effect to them or photoshopped them, this would make them stand out more. I would also make the background plain, so there is nothing going on behind them, this would make them look so much better because it will be focusing on just the individual, I would also make sure the string is all the way around the face so it looks more like Wes Naman's work.
Edoardo De Falchi
For my next experiment I am going to re-do my last one with the string. However this time i will be doing it slightly different, i will be doing them all with a plain background, this is so the photograph is only focused on the individual. Also then i will be making a collage to stick over the face of the person, the collage will be varied textures such as grass, trees, brick walls, buildings, walls, hair and some of my previous photographs.
Final Piece:
From a variety of themes I chose the theme 'fantastic and strange', this is because out of all the different kind of themes i could have picked, i found this certain one most appealing to me and it seemed really interesting and i think i will find it really good and challenging to work on, also as i am taking most of my photographs and doing my experimentations within school, it is a great environment to be working on this specific theme. The photos i've seen of fantastic and strange have seemed very imaginative and fascinating and the photographers i saw from the pinterest site seemed impressive.
AO1: I started this project by looking at various different photographers on pinterest, this is where i found all of the artists i researched, i then began to research double exposure artists, these are photographers such as, Edmund Teske and Aneta Ivanova, i only completed a small amount of research on them but i really liked their photos because i liked the way they exposed two different photos, with different meanings, into one. This work inspired me to take some of my first sets of images in this course and also one of my last experiments. I then tried to do double exposure myself to see how it would turn out, i done this in the dark room in the photography department and done double exposure through photograms. My first experiments of double exposures wasn't really impressive, it turned out really blurry and dark but my others which i done later on, were quite good but i wanted them to come out better, so when i started my experiments on double exposure instead of going into the dark room i double exposed on an iPod through an app called blender. I then moved on to researching fantastic and strange artists, these were photographers such as, Iris Van Herpen, Chema Madoz, Wes Naman, Mari Mahr and Jerry uelsmann. I researched all of these photographers and explained what i liked about the specific person, and for some of them i analysed and observed one image of theirs and wrote what was happening in the image and what i could see. Wes Naman inspired me to do my last set of experiments because i liked the way his photographs were really strange but at the same time they looked so good, he wrapped tape around peoples faces, i didnt want to copy him completely so i decided to do it with string instead.
AO2: In one of my first experiments, we done them in the dark room, we got two different negatives and placed one on top of the other, i liked the way they turn't out but i wanted them to stand out more so i decided to take the photographs for my first experiment on an iPod whilst using a double exposure app called blender, i found this better than using the dark room because the app allowed me to decide which of the images i would like to stand out more and which one i would like to be noticed less and also it let me put an effect on them so they all turned out different types of colours. For my second, third and fourth experiments, i used several photos from my phone and photographs i took around the school, to develop in photoshop, before this project i never usually worked with photoshop and i didn't know what did what on it. But when i done these experiments i just played around with each picture and if i liked what i had done to them i would have kept them, in my opinion i think this was the best way to develop my images because all of my photographs came out really impressive after i used photoshop, this is why my final evaluation was done with photoshop. In my last experiment i didn't use any techniques and processes, i just took the photos with a digital camera, but i did use materials such as string to wrap around their faces.
AO3: I have recorded all of my research, ideas, observations and experiments on my fantastic and strange unit 2 page. My page is well-organised and everything is easily located. Recording my research and observations have helped me develop my other experiments because having everything on my page and in front of me, inspires me to make them better and it is easier to see what i have done right and what i have done wrong. I have looked at several different photographers from the topics fantastic and strange or double exposure, i tried to work around their work and touch upon it in my own photographs and experiments.
AO4: Fantastic and strange has a wide range of different styles, i tried to collaborate some of my favourite fantastic and strange photographers and their work with my images. When it came to taking the photos, i captured them within and outside of the school, but all of my evaluations and research was done inside the classroom, i tried doing most of my work from my imagination and ideas, but some of my work was inspired by photographers that i liked, such as Wes Naman. I chose to present a personal and meaningful response by using photographs i took at home, which are of my friends and family and used them in my experiments.
Conclusion: Overall i am satisfied with the progress i have made, i think i made the right decision with choosing the theme fantastic and strange for my chosen topic, i found it really fascinating and challenging, i like to push myself to capture different things and to try and make them seem interesting and intriguing to others, for my previous experiments i done this by using a range of techniques and processes such as photoshop, iPhoto, ipod apps and more. I think i done really well in this course and i tried my best to succeed, i think i done plenty of research and i observed them in full to the best i could. My experiments were captured in the best way they could, and i tried out a range of techniques and processes which i think made my photographs look much better. If i had more time the only thing i would improve is i would take a load more photos, in and outside of the school, and i would maybe experiment with more techniques and processes, as well as trying out a much greater amount of styles from photographers i have seen and heard of.
